What is gum recession?
How does it develop?

Gum recession is a widely prevalent issue, and it is a multifaceted condition primarily dealt with by the field of periodontology. Possible symptoms include, among others:

  • receding gums around the tooth neck
  • tooth sensitivity at the gumline
  • open spaces between teeth: “black triangles” appear between teeth
  • unpleasant breath
  • bleeding, inflamed gums
  • bleeding, inflamed gums

If you recognize yourself based on the list, it’s possible that you are suffering from gum disease. This is an inflammatory condition, with various factors playing a role in its development, ranging from the oral bacterial environment to individual susceptibility and the presence of previous, poorly designed dental restorations.

In most cases, the inflammation is caused by the persistent presence of plaque and tartar. The bacteria that make up these deposits produce substances that keep the gums in a continuous state of mild inflammation. The immune system tries to fight against these bacteria, leading to the breakdown of the bone tissue in the gum, often accompanied by the recession of the covering gum.

What are the benefits of treatment?

The most common symptom affecting the structural integrity of the teeth is bleeding gums. During this time, we are inclined to “spare” the affected area, either not brushing our teeth or doing so very gently to avoid pain. However, this inadvertently promotes further plaque buildup and thickening of tartar, exacerbating the situation.

In such cases, the solution is to visit our dentist or dental hygienist. If the inflammation is localized only to the gums, its removal, along with tartar and plaque, can eliminate the inflammation, and the symptoms will subside.

However, if deeper tissues are already affected, further treatments are necessary. Without proper treatment, teeth may become loose, shift from their positions, and in extreme cases, fall out; the accustomed smile and facial structure may be compromised.

Untreated gum disease can be considered a focus, which can be associated with other systemic disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, low birth weight and premature birth, and inflammation of implanted prostheses.

Inflammation-free gums are part of our overall health.

What is the treatment procedure?

Step 1.

Determining the need for periodontal treatment is typically revealed through dental assessments, routine screenings, professional teeth cleanings, or based on patients’ descriptions of their complaints.

Step 2.

Tartar removal, cleaning, and polishing of tooth surfaces. It is crucial to emphasize the importance of proper oral care. Our dental hygienists provide useful advice at this stage to ensure successful maintenance of the achieved results at home.

Step 3.

If further treatments are necessary, our periodontists perform them, establishing a diagnosis and treatment plan through a very thorough measurement around every tooth at 6 points. Cleaning under the gums is almost always necessary. This is done under local anesthesia, using both ultrasonic and manual tools. Then follows an approximately two-month healing phase. When this period is over, another assessment, a repeated examination, is necessary to check how well the bone and soft tissues supporting the teeth have healed due to the treatments. This two-month healing period is often interspersed with an oral hygiene check. This is necessary because to truly improve the condition, a very good at-home oral care routine is essential.

This stage of therapy includes the removal of hopeless teeth and, if necessary, the bracing of severely loose teeth.

It is possible that a single deep cleaning is not sufficient. In such cases, another cleaning under the gums may be necessary, potentially involving minor surgical exposure.

Step 4.

For diseases affecting the tooth socket, regular check-ups are crucial. Gum disease and resulting gum recession are irreversible, and those who have gone through it once are more likely to relapse. Therefore, it is important to prevent the recurrence of the disease through thorough at-home oral care, regular check-ups coordinated with the periodontist, and tartar removal.
