What is prevention?

The meaning of prevention is: prevention. It includes all interventions aimed at maintaining health and preventing the development of diseases.

Dental preventive treatments can prevent tooth decay, gum inflammation, and, in advanced cases, inflammation and, in severe cases, necrosis of the dental pulp.

Our practice places great emphasis on prevention; our trained dental hygienists, iTOP trainers, and dentists all work to keep your teeth and gums healthy for many years.

Our main prevention services include:

  • professional teeth cleaning, tartar removal, Air Flow treatment
  • iTOP: you can read more about this topic in our blog post by clicking here.
  • dental check-ups

Advantages of preventive procedures

Prevention essentially begins with health education. This is, of course, a very complex issue. It includes, for example, the texture and sugar content of the consumed food, as well as the technique and frequency of tooth brushing.

However, it can be unequivocally stated that the best investment is in prevention – and this is not just in financial terms. One’s own, healthy teeth are more valuable in every respect than, in certain cases, an implant.

The main advantage of preventive treatments lies in the fact that they educate about health consciousness and, along with that, instill a kind of health-conscious perspective.

What is a dental hygiene
treatment?

Dental hygiene encompasses all treatments aimed at improving and maintaining oral hygiene. Our skilled dental hygienist colleagues perform these interventions. In our clinic, the main dental hygiene treatments include:

Depuration

Ultrasonic or manual removal of tartar, followed by polishing the treated tooth surfaces with various tools.

Air Flow

The most modern and gentle method for removing plaque. Our clinic is equipped with several modern EMS Air Flow devices, which spray a mixture of air, water, and very finely ground sweetener powder onto the tooth surfaces – their effectiveness and gentleness lie precisely in this.

Professional Teeth Cleaning

This service is the most comprehensive and frequently recommended dental hygiene treatment. After using the EMS Air Flow device, if necessary, tartar is also removed. The treatment concludes with a thorough oral examination – our colleagues examine and demonstrate the most effective way to clean each interdental space with a properly sized interdental brush.

What are the benefits? Why is it necessary?

The oral cavity contains numerous bacteria and other microorganisms. Similar to the gastrointestinal system, their presence here is desirable and beneficial – up to a certain extent.

Like on any hard surface (think of a stone in a stream), bacteria adhere to the surfaces of teeth and form a biofilm. If, for some reason, this biofilm is not removed, the bacterial colony begins to grow. More and more microorganisms attach, and the plaque on our teeth continues to increase. Through the bacterial metabolic processes, they produce acid as a byproduct. This, firstly, damages the tooth enamel – dental caries develops on this basis, which, if not treated in time, can lead to inflammation of the dental pulp. Secondly, it leads to gum inflammation.

Over time, the plaque begins to calcify due to the effect of ions released from saliva – thus, tartar is formed. Since its surface is rough, it promotes further bacterial adhesion, creating a self-sustaining process.

Various preventive activities – whether at home with thorough tooth brushing using the correct technique or at the clinic with professional teeth cleaning – intervene in this process: they remove the plaque from the teeth.

Attention! Some situations can make successful oral care particularly challenging. These include, without claiming completeness:

  • crowded teeth,
  • Orthodontic appliances like braces or retention devices,
  • improperly designed dental prosthetics.

In the presence of these situations, it is strongly recommended to seek advice from a specialist for successful tooth brushing.

What is the treatment procedure?

In our clinic, the main dental hygiene treatments include:

Depuration:

Step 1.

This is essentially the traditional removal of tartar. It is usually done with an ultrasonic device, supplemented with manual tools if necessary. The ultrasonic waves from the applied device (depurator) effectively and gently remove the accumulated tartar on the tooth surface.

Step 2.

The intervention concludes with smoothing and polishing the treated tooth surfaces. This can be done with special polishing strips, air polishing, polishing brushes, and pastes, or a combination of these.

Air Flow:

The most advanced and gentle tool for plaque removal is Air Flow. Essentially, it can be considered a kind of polishing: a mixture of air, water, and very finely ground sweetener powder is sprayed onto the tooth surface – their effectiveness and gentleness lie precisely in this.

Our clinic is equipped with several modern EMS Air Flow devices, which we use during professional teeth cleanings and periodontal treatments.

Professional teeth cleaning:

What is teeth whitening? When do we use it?

Teeth whitening may be necessary if we are not satisfied with the color of our teeth, or if some of our teeth – for example, due to root canal treatment – are darker than the others. In the former case, we treat every tooth; in the latter case, we only treat specific teeth, and the applied procedure is different.

At CosmoDent, we prioritize the safety of our patients, so we only use teeth whitening materials and procedures that comply with EU regulations – We have chosen the Philips ZOOM WhiteSpeed system, which has been chosen by more than 4 million patients worldwide. This is one of the most reliable teeth whitening systems in the world.

What are the advantages?

The absolute benefit of teeth whitening is a more confident smile – and as we know, the most beautiful accessory anyone can wear is their smile.

The process of teeth whitening is always tailored to your needs. In-office teeth whitening is performed by our dental hygienists. For those patients who would like to apply the teeth whitening procedure at home, either as a complement to in-office teeth whitening or independently, we teach step-by-step how to do it.

How does teeth whitening work in our clinic?

Teeth whitening is always preceded by a dental consultation and assessment. If there is a need for tartar removal, fillings, or other treatments that may affect the color of the teeth, we start with those. It may happen that after a professional cleaning – tartar removal, polishing – or the replacement of old fillings, the teeth become whiter to the extent that teeth whitening is no longer necessary.

Good to know:

During teeth whitening, only the original tooth tissue becomes brighter; the procedure has no effect on the color of fillings, crowns, etc. After teeth whitening, our teeth may become temporarily sensitive, but this usually disappears within 1-2 weeks. For a quicker resolution, we can use a toothpaste that reduces tooth sensitivity.

Step 1.

Cleaning and polishing the teeth to enhance the effectiveness of teeth whitening. It is advisable to perform this in a separate session, up to a week before the planned teeth whitening. If you decide to do so, you can take an impression after the teeth cleaning, which will be used to make the teeth whitening.

Step 2.

Covering the gums and mucous membranes with a special material to protect them from the teeth whitening agent. Applying the teeth whitening gel to the external surface of the teeth and illuminating it with a bright light. The light helps activate the whitening agent, allowing it to penetrate the tooth enamel more quickly and remove or break down discolorations.

Step 3.

After 15 minutes, we thoroughly rinse off the teeth whitening gel and apply another layer to the teeth. We repeat the treatment three times to achieve the best results.

Step 4.

The achieved tooth color can be further brightened with at-home teeth whitening. We provide a teeth whitening tray and whitening agent that can be applied to the teeth. Using these at-home for 2-3 hours daily for one week after in-office teeth whitening enhances the appearance of our teeth.
To maintain the results, it’s advisable to keep the received teeth whitening tray, and the teeth whitening agent is continuously available at our clinic – feel free to ask our colleagues.

What is internal teeth whitening?

We call it internal teeth whitening when only the color of certain teeth needs to be whitened – typically, root-treated teeth may become darker over time. In such cases, the teeth need to be whitened from the inside.

To do this, we remove the filling covering the root filling on the oral side of the root-treated teeth, place the teeth whitening gel inside the tooth, and cover it with a well-sealing temporary filling. The active ingredient works for 3-5 days, gradually exerting its effect. Afterward, we check if we are satisfied with the achieved shade.

If we want a lighter shade, the process can be repeated. Once we are satisfied with the final result, we remove the teeth whitening gel and create a new filling.
