What are dental braces?
The value of well-aligned teeth goes beyond an aesthetic smile. In cases of harmonious alignment of individual tooth groups, they support each other and protect the temporomandibular joint during jaw movements. This is the primary goal of orthodontics professionally, but the applied techniques can also be specifically used for aesthetic tooth alignment.
Dental braces and age
Orthodontics means different things at different ages because while we can influence the growth of growing jawbones and the available bone size for teeth in the case of growing jawbones, after bone growth is complete, teeth can only be aligned within the existing bone without surgery.
The final position of the teeth during their growth is determined not only by the size of the jawbones and the arrangement of the teeth but also by the forces acting on them, such as the pressure of the tongue or lips. Proper swallowing, feeding practices in infancy, different habits such as pacifier use or thumb-sucking all influence the later development of the teeth. Therefore, the development of correct and harmonious muscle function is also part of orthodontics.
Orthodontics can close the gaps left by missing teeth or reposition teeth that have shifted or turned due to periodontal disease.
Can orthodontic treatment be performed at almost any age nowadays?
Yes, but there is still an optimal time to start treatment. There are tasks that can indeed be performed almost anytime, while others can only be successfully executed at a certain point in development. With proper timing, we can promote the favorable development of jawbones, choose the most optimal method, and/or shorten the treatment time. It is important to emphasize that it is not necessary, and indeed, it is not advisable to wait for the permanent teeth to fully emerge before starting orthodontic treatment.
What is the treatment procedure? What techniques
are applied?
In very young children
During the primary dentition period, the emphasis is primarily on breaking habits that affect tooth development and harmonizing muscle functions. The most common tasks involve weaning off habits such as pacifier use, thumb-sucking, pencil biting, and transitioning from mouth breathing to nose breathing. It is important that during the transition from mouth to nose breathing, there are no ear, nose, or throat obstacles hindering nasal breathing. Specific orthodontic devices (trainers) designed for this purpose can assist in giving up these bad habits and optimizing muscle functions
The first orthodontic examination should ideally take place as soon as any issues are detected, but at the latest during the early mixed dentition period, around 7-8 years old. Interventions may not necessarily be required at this stage, but the examination can identify issues that may require early intervention. The key is to ensure optimal growth of the jawbones, allowing unrestricted movement and symmetrical functioning of the lower jaw, thereby promoting the development of a harmonious face. In cases of untreated crossbites, for example, initial functional deviations can later lead to asymmetric facial growth and/or temporomandibular joint problems.
In late mixed dentition
Naturally, after growth is completed, the alignment of teeth within the jawbone can be adjusted even in adulthood, with the limitation being mainly the condition of the bone and gums. This space is limited, so in some cases, tooth slimming (subtle reshaping of contacting surfaces) or, in cases of significant discrepancies, even orthognathic surgery may be necessary.
In these cases, efforts should be made towards gentle force tooth movement, primarily achievable with self-ligating bonded appliances or digitally/computer-designed transparent aligners.
Latest Generation
Self-ligating Fixed Appliances
The self-ligating technique eliminates the need for traditional binding elements such as rubber bands and wires that hold the orthodontic archwires in the brackets.
This new development comes with significant advantages:
With self-ligating orthodontic systems, tooth movement is faster, maintaining the appliance is easier, and the aesthetic problem of discolored rubber elements is eliminated.
Less time is spent in the dentist’s chair, and perhaps fewer check-ups are needed for the expected results.
With this system, teeth move more efficiently, potentially reducing the treatment time.
They are available in both metal and ceramic versions.
Porcelain orthodontic brackets produced with state-of-the-art technology are less fragile, less visible, transparent, and have rounded edges for comfortable fitting. Style and technology combined.
Without wires and rubber elements that can discolor and trap food residues, where plaque can adhere, it is much easier to keep clean. Therefore, the chances of tooth decay and teeth discoloration are significantly reduced.
Therefore, when the time comes for your orthodontist to remove the appliance, there will be nothing left but your new dazzling smile! If the Self-Ligating Orthodontic System has caught your attention and you would like to learn more about it, sign up for a specialized consultation with us!
Invisible braces – transparent aligners
For adult orthodontics too – Clear Correct
Digital technology allows for computerized pre-modeling of orthodontics.
We take impressions of the teeth – either traditionally through impression molds, from which we create a digital (computer-readable) version in the dental lab, or directly from the teeth using an intraoral scanner to produce a digital impression.
The results are transmitted to a central database, where, based on the desired final outcome, a computer program plans the movement of individual teeth and determines how many steps can be taken with gentle forces from the initial position to the final result. ClearCorrect braces are designed centrally for the entire world ( in the United States). The advantage of this is that due to the control of a very large number of cases and the results of completed treatments, a very precisely designed program is available for orthodontic treatment.
Both the orthodontist and the patient can review the movement of the teeth on a screen before starting the treatment, and modifications can be requested if necessary. The manufacturing of the aligners begins after the approval of the plans. For each movement step, there is a transparent aligner that, when placed on the teeth, gently and minimally shifts them into the desired position. The next aligner is then used for another small movement. The end result of many small movements is achieving the planned alignment of the dental arch/teeth.
These braces are not checked at regular intervals but rather at intervals prescribed by the program – when there may be a need for intervention. Therefore, it may be necessary to check every two weeks in certain phases of the treatment, while in other stages, it might be only every 2-3 months. These check-up intervals are known during the planning stage, i.e., before the treatment begins.
Despite being removable, it is crucial to wear these “devices”/aligners continuously; otherwise, they cannot achieve their intended effect. They should only be removed during meals, and after cleaning the teeth, they must be immediately placed back in the mouth.
In return, they provide very comfortable wear and are virtually invisible to an external observer!

In the last two weeks, my wife and I visited you several times for check-ups, cleanings, and each of us had a filling done by Dr. Vivien Farkas or Márta Nagy. We would like to give feedback that we were very satisfied with the treatment. We are grateful for the helpful advice. The atmosphere at your clinic was very pleasant. It was great to experience how well you cared for us, without overdoing it. Although we don’t usually stress about going to the dentist, I noticed that the last time we went to you, we were completely relaxed, which I think is very cool considering that many people don’t like going to the dentist. We wish you continue to provide your service so beautifully!

“It seemed like all my teeth had to be pulled out. However, after a thorough examination, it turned out that most of my teeth could be saved. The whole team, especially my dentist, Dr. Peter Rosta, made a great effort and did a fantastic job. I am already full of positive expectations for the next stage of my treatment, when I will get the implants. I really hope that after the complete treatment, I will have an aesthetic and, above all, functional set of teeth again.
I can only recommend the team at Cosmodent to everyone!”
